Mumbai : shun the crap about Spirit of Mumbai and stop to grieve..plzz

Posted by Unknown on Nov 29, 2008

In Brief :

I urge the Mumbaikar's to show a little less spirit this time and pray/grieve for the hundreds who have lost their lives in the terrorist attack on the city. We seem to be using the "spirit of mumbai" as an excuse to hide our growing indifference to the gruesome attacks which seem to have become a way of life here. I'm not sure which is better :
  • Going about our life as if nothing happened : to give a strong reply to the terrorists.
  • Stopping in our tracks and share our loss and grief together : a strong reply to the government that we have suffered and you better do something about it.

It's time to salute the brave army men, NSG,mumbai police, scribes covering the episode and valiant civilians living/dead who fought willingly/unwillingly.

Speculation time: Microsoft Live Search to be Kumo !!

Posted by Unknown on Nov 25, 2008

In Brief : Rumours have it that Microsoft intends to re-brand its Live Search into Kumo next year.
The company has allegedly already acquired the domain Kumo.com last week
It has been also securing all the other variants of Kumo (.net, .jp, .fr and so on).
All these domains are now being held by CSC Corporate Domains, Microsoft's domain registrar of choice at the moment.
CSC Corporate reportedly picked the domain up from semiconductor equipment supplier Schlumberger, which renounced at the domain a few years ago.
Kumo is the Japanese term for "spider" and "cloud," both words fitting the general idea of search technology.
The acquiring of Kumo.com and other domains for Kumo sparked speculation that Microsoft is making a second re-branding after MSN and Live.com.
Another hint that Microsoft is taking measures to boost Live Search is that it has recently hired Sean Suchter, currently Yahoo's vice president of search technology.
According to the latest data provided by ComScore and Citi Investment Research,
  • Microsoft’s Live Search : 8.9 %
  • Google : 63 % (of search market)
  • Yahoo : 20 %

The big question here is whether Kumo.com will have more success that Live.com, which reached a dead end and hasn’t grown in the past few months despite Microsoft’s programs to actually pay users for using the service.

Searchwiki : google takes search customization to another level !!

Posted by Unknown

In Brief : Google's SearchWiki service enables users to get more involved in the system’s search results.
[[[ A wiki is a page or collection of Web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language.
Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites. The collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia is one of the best-known wikis.
Ward Cunningham, developer of the first wiki software, WikiWikiWeb, originally described it as "the simplest online database that could possibly work".]]]

The new customization process lets users change the results’ ranking and also add comments and annotations.
With just a single click you can move the results you like to the top or add a new site.
You can also write notes attached to a particular site and remove results that you don't feel belong. These modifications will be shown to you every time you do the same search in the future. SearchWiki is available to signed-in Google users.
For now, Google users can only change their own search results, but all the notes can be publicly viewed.

In order to edit and customize the search results, users will have to be signed in to their Google accounts. From that point on, all the new features will become available, allowing the complete rearrangement of the search results, the deletion of unhelpful results and also the remarks on the search’s usefulness.

The Power of "Touch " : know the touchscreen !!

Posted by Unknown on Nov 22, 2008

In Brief : Touchscreen is a display which can detect the presence and location of a touch within the display area.
The term generally refers to touch or contact to the display of the device by a finger or hand. Touchscreens can also sense other passive objects, such as a stylus.
However, if the object sensed is active, as with a light pen, the term touchscreen is generally not applicable.
The ability to interact directly with a display typically indicates the presence of a touchscreen.
Earlier, most consumer touchscreens could only sense one point of contact at a time, and few have had the capability to sense how hard one is touching. This is starting to change with the commercialisation of multi-touch technology.
The touchscreen has two main attributes :
First, it enables you to interact with what is displayed directly on the screen, where it is displayed, rather than indirectly with a mouse or touchpad.
Secondly, it lets one do so without requiring any intermediate device, again, such as a stylus that needs to be held in the hand.
Such displays can be attached to computers or, as terminals, to networks. They also play a prominent role in the design of digital appliances such as the personal digital assistant (PDA), satellite navigation devices and mobile phones.
Problem 1 : stress on human fingers.
Solution : Use fingernails as stylus.
Problem 2 : fingerprints on the display
Solution : use optical coating to prevent finger oils to stick.
Problem 3 : "Gorilla Arm" effect- Cramps in finger and arm.
Solution : horizontally oriented touchscreen minimises it, but it remains an issue.

Intel launches i7 processor in India !!

Posted by Unknown on Nov 20, 2008

In Brief : Intel launched it's Core i7 processor in India ....

Intel has released three different models of the Core i7 - all quad core variants with hyper-threading :

* Core i7 920 clocked at 2.66 GHz priced at $284 (approximately Rs.14,063),
* Core i7 940 clocked at 2.93 GHz priced at $562 (approximately Rs.27,830),
* Core i7 965 XE (Extreme Edition) clocked at 3.2 GHz priced at $999 (approximately Rs.49,470)

The Core i7 processors are markedly different from their predecessors and have many advantages over them.

  • There is the increased parallelism with the processor being capable of executing 33% more concurrent micro-ops simultaneously.
  • There is also the faster unaligned cache access and faster synchronization primitives. Intel has also implemented a new 2nd level branch predictor to avoid situations when execution units stand idle.
  • Yet another improvement is the cache sub-system that has been redesigned from scratch.
  • The Core i7 processor also marks an end of the legendary FSB (Front Side Bus). These processors feature the new Quick Path Interconnect (QPI) bus, which is Intel's answer to AMD's Hypertransport 3.0 and a three channel memory controller supporting 1066 MHz DDR3 memory is present on-chip.
  • Multi-threading technology (similar to hyper-threading of the NetBurst architecture processors) is also featured on these CPUs with SSE 4.2 instructions. These are capable of handling up to eight software threads on four processor cores.
  • Turbo Boost technology allows the cores to bump up the clock speeds when deemed necessary.
  • This quad-core chip is manufactured using the 45nm process, sporting 731 million transistors.
  • Combined with the Intel X58 chipset-based motherboards with LGA1366 socket, these are incompatible with older motherboards. Currently, these can only be used with motherboards based on the Intel X58 chipset.

Update : For the technologically inclined ... http://www.pcworld.com/article/154361/getting_to_the_core_of_intels_new_core_i7_cpus.html

Difference between Core2Duo and dual core..Did you know??

Posted by Unknown

In Brief : Those who don't know the difference between core2duo and dual core :

  • Core2duo is a brand of Intel just like Pentium D or Pentium 4
  • Both Core2duo and Pentium D processors are dual core
  • It's just that Core2duo processor has a different arhitecture than Pentium D and even the lower end Core2duo processors are faster than higher end Pentium D
  • So if its dual core, it could be Core2duo or Pentium D or any other dual core processor
  • Core2Duo processors are fasterthan Pentium D ones and hence better.

Leonid meteor shower : watch out for celestial fireworks till Nov. 21 !!

Posted by Unknown on Nov 18, 2008

In Brief : It's the Leonid meteor shower time again...keep sky-gazing till Nov. 21...you might be lucky !!
The Leonids are a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Tempel-Tuttle.
The Leonids get their name from the location of their radiant in the constellation Leo: the
meteors appear to stream from that point in the sky.
The Leonids generally begin on November 13 and end on November 21, with maximum generally occurring during the night of Novemer 17/18.
Observers are generally treated to displays of about 10 meteors per hour on the night of
maximum.
About every 33 years, the Leonids enter a phase of enhanced activity that accompanies the
return of its parent comet. During these periods, rates can amount to hundreds and even
thousands of meteors per hour. The last such enhanced period occurred during the period of
1998-2002 and the Leonids have been winding down ever since.

Douglas and has been regularly awarded since 1950.
Its purpose is to give recognition and support to younger mathematical researchers who have
made major contributions
The International Union has awarded its 2006 prizes on August 22, 2006 during the Opening
Ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid, Spain.
The next prizes will be awarded during the opening ceremony of ICM 2010 in Hyderabad, India on August 19, 2010.
In 2006, Grigori Perelman, credited with proving the Poincaré conjecture, refused his Fields
Medal and did not attend the congress. More...
IMU Prizes are awarded every four years at the Opening Ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM).
The Fields Medal recognizes outstanding mathematical achievement.
The Rolf Nevanlinna Prize honors distinguished achievements in mathematical aspects of information science.

Michael Crichton passes away.....

Posted by Unknown on Nov 6, 2008

  • Michael Crichton, the doctor-turned-author of bestselling thrillers such as "The Terminal Man" and "Jurassic Park" and a Hollywood writer and director whose credits include "Westworld" and "Coma," has died. He was 66.

For nearly four decades, the 6-foot-9 writer was a towering presence in the worlds of publishing and filmmaking.

Lynn Nesbit, Crichton's agent since the late '60s, told the Los Angeles Times,"There was no one like Crichton, because he could both entertain and educate. His brilliance was indisputable, and he had a grasp of so many subjects -- from art to science to technology. I respected him so much intellectually and as a writer. I loved him. It's like losing a very good friend as well as a client of so many years."

Director Steven Spielberg in a statement Wednesday said, "Michael's talent out-scaled even his own dinosaurs of 'Jurassic Park.' He was the greatest at blending science with big theatrical concepts, which is what gave credibility to dinosaurs again walking the Earth."

Spielberg, who was a new contract TV director at Universal in the early '70s when he met Crichton and was assigned to show the writer around the lot, described him as "a gentle soul who reserved his flamboyant side for his novels.

    Crichton's body of work....

1966 "Odds On," novel. Written under the pen name John Lange, about a robbery planned by computer that goes terribly wrong.
1969 "The Andromeda Strain," novel. (Movie, 1971; TV miniseries, 2008.) An alien micro-organism threatens to wipe out mankind.
1970 "The Terminal Man," novel. (Movie, 1971.) Crichton tackles mind control.
1970 "Five Patients,"non-fiction. Crichton's first of four non-fiction works, about his experience at a Boston hospital.
1972 "Binary," novel, as John Lange. Crichton makes his directorial debut with a TV movie of the same story, renamed "Pursuit," the same year.
1973 "Westworld," feature film. Crichton writes and directs, with Yul Brynner as a robot that turns homicidal in a role playing vacation spot.
1975 "The Great Train Robbery," novel. He writes and directs movie adaptation, 1979, starring Donald Sutherland.
1981 "Looker," movie. Writes and directs this techno-thriller, starring Albert Finney.
1984 "Runaway," movie. Writes and directs story about murderous robots and heat-seeking bullets, starring Tom Selleck.
1987 "Sphere," novel. (Movie, 1998.) Spaceships, black holes and time travel.
1990 "Jurassic Park," novel. (Movie, co-writes screenplay, 1993.) Cloned dinosaurs squash man's hubris.
1994 "ER," television show. Based on a script Crichton had written 20 years earlier. He serves as creator, writer and executive producer.
1995 "The Lost World," novel. (Movie, 1997). More dinosaurs.
1996 "Twister," movie. Crichton co-writes screenplay.
2002 "Prey," novel. Beware of artificial intelligence.
2004 "State of Fear," novel. Global warming isn't real, according to Crichton. Scientists attack.
2006 "Next," novel. Beware of genetics.
